THE JANAMBHUMI

The Janambhumi Group of Publications was established in Jorhat with the launch of a weekly newspaper -The Janambhumi in 1947 and this paper has had an uninterrupted run since then and holds the distinction of being the oldest Assamese Weekly.

In 1972, a daily newspaper, DAINIK JANAMBHUMI was launched. The second and, third editions were launched from Guwahati, and Tinsukia in 2001 and, 2004 respectively.

The Group today holds an unique position and commands enormous respect for the role it plays in the Assamese society. Its unbiased presentation of news is its forte and the constructive role and leadership is unmatched by any media in Assam.

The Janambhumi, as the group is popularly known, had produced a number of eminent Editors and journalists and almost all newspaper houses have the privilege of being served by them very competently.

In times of natural calamity The Janambhumi has always been a leader in providing relief to the needy. The public has always come forward with their unstinted contributions with the true belief the their money will be properly utilized and will reach for whom it is intended. Earthquakes in Northern/Western India ,recurrent floods in Assam have seen the role of relief collection by The Janambhumi at its best and its testimony is the enormous money it has raised from all sections of the society.

The Tankeswar Sarmah Memorial Trust is run by the group and it extends help in health care , eduction and funds orphanages. Its major beneficiaries are the Jananayak Debeswar Sarmah Civil Hospital , Jorhat, Guwahati Pain And Palliative Clinic, Dagaon Child Orphanage, Jorhat Blind School,. Over and above these the Trust has been extending financial help to meritorious needy children who have shown academic brilliance.

The Group has been very successfully holding Painting competitions all over the state as well as Quiz competitions at the state level. It has also been holding citizen awareness programs at rural areas with an aim to bring together citizens with the administration and with their elected representatives.

A Charitable Trust in the name and style of Janambhumi Janakalyan was started by the Group in the Eighties to carry on all the Social, Public and Charitable works under its aegis.

The Trust, in the year 2005 embarked on a special project “The Janambhumi Janakalyan Education Trust” to create awareness, motivate and sponsor meritorious students to compete in the UPSC Examinations with an aim to produce Administrative Service Officers for the State.

For the 7th year running since 2005 to 2011, The Trust had already selected 24 number of students, provided scholarships and guidance through various seminars and camps, arranged for their coaching in the leading Institutes in New Delhi and this year we are proud to achieve our goal of creating two numbers of IAS Officers from the State out of the eleven. They are Biswajit Pegu and Ashiquzzaman who ranked 116 and 244 respectively.

The trust also plan to extend its activities to other fields of education in the near future.
